The outstanding Sunni scholar, Shaikh Abdol-Hameed, expressed his regrets over neglecting the Iranian Sunni community in the cabinet of President Dr. Hassan Rouhani in the Eid sermon of Zahedan on Friday, 09 August, 2013.

Pointing out towards his participation in the oath ceremony of the new Iranian president, he mentioned the ideas of Mr. Rouhani optimistic. Shaikh added more, “Dr. Rouhani is a capable, significant and wise man; as he claims, he has chosen members of his cabinet on the basis of proficiency and experience. Rulers must be ‘strong’ and ‘honest’ as the brilliant directions of the noble Qur’an affirm.”

Khateeb of Sunnis said that it was wonderful to know the new president of Iran wants to manage the matters of minorities and different sects and communities soberly. The national and international communities also welcomed the fair and reasonable stances of the president.

“We want the due respect of our people and country; thus we ask the new president to ensure the peace and unity of the country, to provide people welfare and rebuff the economic sanctions. National unity, solidarity, and development of the country in all fields are our demands,” he underlined.

The eminent Sunni leader and member of the IUMS further said despite capable and eligible Sunni citizens, there is no any Sunni member of the new cabinet. ‘We and Sunni MPs pursued the case; we asked for at least two Sunni ministers in the cabinet. But the advisors to the president believed the parliament would refuse them. We replied Dr. Rouhani should nominate two Sunnis for ministry, and then defend his decision roundly; if the parliament disapproves them, it would pass the buck to MPs,’ Shaikh Abdol-Hameed urged.

The rector of Darululoom Zahedan went on to say more, “It should be noted Dr. Rouhani has not promised to nominate any Sunnis for ministry; but we think the nomination of Sunnis for cabinet will add to the respect of Iran and Shia community around the world. It would be considered a big achievement for the Iranian regime, as Shia minorities in the Muslim world would get more honor and the Iranian Sunnis also would be happy in their country.”

“We know there are some obstacles on the way of the new president and he faces pressure; being Sunnis, we think the new government must guarantee the rights of religious and ethnic minorities on different levels. We have been struggling for 35 years to give the Sunnis their due respect as the Constitution affirms. Their efficient men must have shares in power to serve their own people and motherland. Most of the Sunnis, about five million voters, cast their vote for Mr. Rouhani; he should take care of them. Mr. Rouhani was not well-oriented and popular among Sunni masses; they just liked and supported his ideas, stances and promises. The Sunnis must not get a chip on their shoulder,” Mawlana Abdol-Hameed pointed.

The rulers can’t force the Sunnis to announce Eid on a particular day
Khateeb of Ahl-us-Sunnah alluded to the first day of the tenth lunar month, Shawwal, saying, “Thursday, August 08, 2013, was not Eid al-Fitr day in Iran; nobody witnessed the new moon. So if anyone did not observe fast, s/he should observe fast another day to compensate the missing day.”

Talking on the topic more, the chairman of the Coordination Council of Sunni Seminaries underlined, “We are not supposed to announce Eid if in any other part of the world some countries do so. Ulama, Islamic scholars, of any region issue fatwas as their jurisprudence and conditions require. There is no any pressure from the regime to announce the Eid day on any particular day. We act upon our own legal commands freely.”

Alluding to demise of his elder brother, he thanked the governor, the representative of the Supreme Leader and other official and non-official men, people from inside and outside Iran who expressed their condolence him and the family of his late brother, Haji Abdullah.

At the end of his speech, Shaikh Abdol-Hameed expressed his sorrow over allotment of an outland field for Sunnis’ Mosalla in Zahedan. He said some officials flattened a field out of the city without an accord with Sunnis and their scholars. Most of the worshippers go on feet to Mosalla; so it must be somewhere near to the residential areas. The authorities promised to allot the field that we have asked for it; so God willing we will establish Eid al-Adha prayers in the new place.
